Cooking in Community Debrief

This past Sunday, September 8, was our first Cooking in Community. We made our own takes on Heal Me Delicious’ Chicken and Pumpkin Soup.

I did wind up doubling the recipe and making all the changes I mentioned previously. It turned out amazing.

Lessons

  • Obviously read the whole recipe. I… do as I say. Not as I do. I definitely missed the part where she said put the entire two inch piece of lemongrass in the crock. My lemongrass was all chopped by the time I read that. But it didn’t make the soup any less delicious.
  • Follow my first mind. I read 4 hours on low and knew it was not enough time or heat for a dish with kale and squash. So when I tried a little bowl at the four hour mark, it was not done. I wound up cooking it for 2.5 hours more on high. I should have put it on 4 hours, high from the beginning.
  • Go to the store on Saturday. We went to the grocer on Sunday and got home at 12:58p. I was due to be on camera at 1:00p. So. Yeah. We started late.
  • Preparation times are inaccurate. Nicole said the total time on this recipe is 1h10m. Cook time is one hour. So she’s saying 10 minutes prep? That is absolutely untrue. I was 90 minutes in and hadn’t even put things in the crock.
  • Cilantro and lemongrass go hard? I am loving the way these two things play together in a soup. I have to search up some more recipes that put these together. And then play around with making my own things with them.
  • Find a better way to hold the space. Because we got home so close to the time, I did not have time to ensure the Zoom room was open. And I logged in on a new device. So Zoom wanted verification. Well, the person I borrowed from couldn’t give me the code. So. There was a scramble. It worked out, but I would rather not have that stress again.

Onward and Upward(ish)

Next Sunday, we’re on again. Making Chicken Teriyaki. I’m not confident in this recipe. It look real questionable. Ima meditate on it, research a bit, and come up with the changes that I’ll make.

If you missed Sunday and have not signed up for future events, tap in here. I hope everyone who came last week had a good time. And I look forward to seeing you again.
